Do you know that the surface area of the small intestine is greater than 200 square meters. That's about the size of a tennis court. The surface area of the entire digestive tract would cover an area about the size of two football fields. It is essential to have a healthy gut flora since 75% of our immune system is located in the gut. It is also important to know that half of the body's nerve cells are located in the gut. We all have had heard the phrase "I have a gut feeling", this is because there is a brain, or inherent nervous system, in the bowel. This nervous system is able to control reflexes in the digestive system without input from the brain or spinal cord. Today it is known that there is more serotonin in the gut than in the brain.
