Sarcopenia is the loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength as we age. Sarcopenia has been linked to decreased vitality, poor balance and gait speed, increased falls and fractures, and a shorter life expectancy. Not only is it critical to build strong healthy bones in our youth, it is equally important to reach peak muscle mass while we are young so that when we age it will be easier to build and maintain our muscle. Engaging in regular exercise and making the right dietary choices are essential for preventing sarcopenia.
